P0500 indicates a fault in the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) circuit, meaning the PCM is not receiving a valid speed signal from the sensor. This can be caused by an open, short, or intermittent circuit, or a failed sensor.
The sensor itself has failed electrically or mechanically, producing no or an erratic signal.
Open circuits, shorts, or corrosion in the VSS wiring can prevent the signal from reaching the PCM.
Loose, bent, or corroded pins in the sensor connector can interrupt communication.
Rarely, the PCM’s VSS input driver or internal circuitry can be defective, but this is far less common than sensor or wiring problems.
It is possible but uncommon. In most cases the fault is due to the sensor, its connector, or the wiring. PCM replacement should only be considered after all other possibilities have been ruled out.
After repairing the faulty component, clear the codes with a scan tool or disconnect the battery for a few minutes. The light should turn off if the repair was successful.
Driving is possible, but expect impaired speedometer, possible transmission shifting issues, and reduced functionality of cruise control or traction‑control systems. It is advisable to address the problem promptly.
