P0465 — Evap Purge Flow Sensor Circuit

P0465 indicates that the powertrain control module has detected an electrical circuit fault in the evaporative emission (EVAP) purge flow sensor. This sensor monitors the rate of fuel vapor flow from the charcoal canister into the intake manifold. When the signal voltage falls outside the expected range or is absent, the PCM stores this code.

1. Defective purge flow sensor

The sensor can fail internally due to age, heat, or contamination from fuel vapors, producing an erratic or absent signal.

2. Wiring or connector fault

Corroded, bent, loose, or moisture-intruded terminals, as well as chafed wires in the harness, can create opens, shorts, or high resistance in the circuit.

3. Charcoal canister contamination

Carbon debris migrating from a saturated or deteriorated canister can clog the sensor orifice or internals, causing implausible flow readings.

4. Purge hose leak or restriction

A cracked, disconnected, or collapsed vacuum hose can alter purge flow and cause sensor readings that appear electrically out of range.

5. PCM internal fault

An extremely uncommon cause is a failed analog-to-digital converter or internal driver within the PCM; this should only be considered after all other possibilities are ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Visually inspect the purge flow sensor, electrical connector, and vacuum hoses for damage, corrosion, or charcoal debris.
  2. Use a scan tool to view live data from the purge flow sensor and compare values to specified ranges.
  3. With the key on, use a digital multimeter to check sensor reference voltage, ground integrity, and signal output at the sensor connector.
  4. Perform continuity and short-to-ground tests on the circuit wiring between the sensor and the PCM.
  5. If wiring is verified good, test or substitute the purge flow sensor to confirm component failure.
  6. Only if all components and wiring are confirmed satisfactory should PCM reprogramming or replacement be evaluated as a last resort.
