P0449 indicates the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected an open circuit in the control side of the evaporative emission (EVAP) system vent valve solenoid. The vent valve normally allows fresh air into the EVAP charcoal canister during purge and self-test cycles, and an open circuit prevents the PCM from commanding it open or closed. This is an electrical circuit-integrity fault rather than a vapor leak, and it can prevent the EVAP system from sealing during the onboard leak test.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Failed vent valve solenoid (open coil)

The most common cause. The solenoid's internal winding breaks open so the PCM cannot energize the valve. Resistance will read as infinite or far above specification when the valve is unplugged and probed.

2. Corroded or damaged connector at the vent valve

Corroded, loose, bent, or backed-out pins at the vent valve connector break the circuit. Often visible as green or white corrosion, water ingress, or a connector that is not fully seated or locked.

3. Broken, chafed, or shorted wiring in the vent valve harness

The harness to the vent valve is typically routed near the fuel tank, underbody, or rear axle where heat, road debris, salt, and abrasion can damage insulation. A break in either the control wire or the ground path produces the same open-circuit detection at the PCM.

4. Poor chassis or PCM-side ground for the vent valve circuit

A corroded, loose, or missing ground splice or eyelet that the vent valve uses for its low-side return path can make the circuit appear open to the PCM, even when the valve and wiring are intact.

5. PCM internal driver failure

Rare. The PCM's output driver for the vent valve can fail open, but this should only be considered after the valve, connector, harness, and ground have all been verified good.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Verify the code with a scan tool and check for related EVAP codes (such as P0440, P0442, P0443, P0455) that may indicate an overlapping fault.
  2. Locate the EVAP vent valve (usually on or near the charcoal canister, or integrated into the fuel tank) and inspect the connector for corrosion, bent pins, or incomplete seating.
  3. Unplug the vent valve and measure its coil resistance with a multimeter, comparing the reading to the manufacturer's specification (commonly 20–50 ohms). An open or very high reading indicates a failed solenoid.
  4. With the connector still disconnected, check the harness side for proper driver voltage/command and a clean ground using a multimeter or a test light, backprobing the terminals as needed.
  5. Inspect the wiring harness between the vent valve and the PCM for chafing, breaks, melted insulation, or stretched conductors, paying particular attention to flex points and areas near exhaust or heat sources.
  6. If the valve, wiring, connector, and ground all test good, evaluate the PCM's output stage with a lab scope or through guided PCM self-tests only as a final step.
