A 'low' reading usually points to an electrical fault such as a short circuit, a failed sensor element, or damaged wiring rather than a catalytic converter problem itself.

3. Short circuit in the sensor signal or ground circuit

A wire shorted to ground within the harness will pull the sensor's signal voltage below the expected range, triggering the code even if the sensor itself is fine.

4. Contamination from oil or coolant leaks

Oil or coolant contacting the sensor tip or its wiring can foul the element and alter its resistance, leading to a low reading.

5. Exhaust leak near the sensor port

A leak at the sensor bung or nearby pipe can change the thermal environment and introduce false readings, though this is less common than the above causes.

6. Faulty engine control module (PCM/ECM)

Very rarely, an internal driver or input issue in the PCM can produce this code. The PCM should only be suspected after all sensors, wiring, and connectors have been thoroughly tested and ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Verify the code with a scan tool and check for any related codes (e.g., P0428 for high input) or pending codes.
  2. Inspect the sensor, its connector, and the wiring harness for visible damage, corrosion, oil/coolant contamination, or melted insulation.
