P0399 indicates the powertrain control module has detected an intermittent or erratic signal from the cylinder 1 combustion-pressure sensor circuit. The sensor measures in-cylinder pressure to monitor combustion quality, and this code means its electrical signal is unstable rather than completely absent or shorted. Because the fault is intermittent, the circuit may test normal when the engine is idle or cold.

1. Defective cylinder 1 pressure sensor

The internal sensing element can degrade from extreme heat and pressure cycles, producing erratic output voltages or data spikes before failing completely.

2. Wiring or connector intermittency

Vibration, engine heat, and oil contamination can cause chafed insulation, broken strands, or poor pin contact in the harness between the sensor and the PCM.

3. Corroded or loose terminals

Micro-corrosion, spread connector pins, or an incompletely latched plug create variable resistance that the PCM interprets as an erratic circuit.

4. Poor ground connection

A loose or corroded ground point for the sensor circuit can introduce electrical noise and voltage drift, causing random signal fluctuations.

5. PCM input circuit fault

Although uncommon, an internal PCM signal-processing fault can misread a valid sensor signal; this should only be considered after the sensor and wiring are fully verified.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Visually inspect the cylinder 1 pressure sensor connector and wiring for oil contamination, corrosion, chafing, or loose terminals
  2. Perform a wiggle test on the harness while monitoring live sensor data or scope traces to isolate sections that cause signal fluctuation
  3. Check the sensor ground for continuity and measure reference voltage at the sensor connector during engine operation
  4. Compare the cylinder 1 pressure sensor output to factory specifications or to other cylinders to confirm erratic behavior
  5. Confirm wiring integrity, then test or replace the sensor; suspect the PCM only if the sensor and entire circuit are proven fault-free

Can I drive with a P0399 code active?

It is not advisable to drive long distances. Erratic combustion-pressure feedback can allow undetected misfires or incorrect timing adjustments that may increase emissions and potentially harm the engine.

Is the cylinder pressure sensor the same as a knock sensor?
