P0338 — Crankshaft Position Sensor Circuit High

P0338 indicates the powertrain control module has detected a higher-than-expected voltage on the crankshaft position sensor signal circuit. This usually means the sensor signal is stuck high because of an internal sensor failure, a wiring short to voltage, or an open ground that prevents the circuit from pulling low. Because the PCM uses this signal for ignition timing and injector synchronization, the fault can cause stalling or a no-start condition.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Failed crankshaft position sensor

The sensor’s internal circuitry can fail and cause the signal output to remain stuck at a high voltage, preventing the PCM from detecting crankshaft rotation.

2. Signal wire shorted to voltage

Chafed, pinched, or melted wiring can allow the sensor signal circuit to contact a 5-volt reference, 12-volt feed, or another voltage source, forcing the circuit high.

3. Open or poor sensor ground circuit

A broken, corroded, or loose ground path can stop the sensor from pulling the signal low, causing the voltage to float to an abnormally high level.

4. Connector corrosion or pin damage

Moisture intrusion, bent terminals, or corrosion in the sensor or harness connector can create shorts between adjacent pins or increase resistance in the return path.

5. PCM input circuit failure

An internal short or rare processing fault inside the PCM can cause it to incorrectly interpret the crankshaft sensor voltage as high even when external circuits test normal.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Visually inspect the sensor, connector, and nearby harness for damage, corrosion, melted insulation, or chafing against engine components.
  2. With the ignition on, measure voltage at the sensor signal circuit; a reading continuously near supply voltage while cranking indicates the sensor is not toggling or the line is shorted high.
  3. Disconnect the crankshaft position sensor and recheck signal wire voltage; if the voltage remains high with the sensor unplugged, the short is in the harness rather than the sensor.
  4. Test the sensor ground circuit for continuity and low resistance back to the PCM or engine ground, and verify the sensor reference voltage is within specification.
  5. Bench-test or scope the sensor output if possible; compare resistance and switching behavior to specification, replacing the sensor if it fails.
  6. If the sensor, grounds, and wiring all test normal and no external short is present, evaluate the PCM input only after all external possibilities are fully eliminated.
