P0336 indicates that the engine control module is receiving a crankshaft position (CKP) sensor signal that is present but outside its expected range, erratic, or otherwise not performing correctly. Unlike P0335 (no signal), this code is set when the signal is intermittent, noisy, or inconsistent with the expected pattern, which the PCM uses to determine engine speed, position, and misfire events.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Failed CKP sensor

Internal electronics or the Hall-effect/magnetic element wear out, producing a weak, noisy, or out-of-range signal. This is the single most common cause of P0336.

2. Damaged reluctor wheel or tone ring

Cracks, missing teeth, or debris on the crankshaft-triggered tone ring distort the signal pattern, causing the PCM to flag a range/performance fault.

3. Wiring, connector, or harness problems

Corroded, loose, chafed, or oil-soaked wiring and terminals at the CKP sensor create signal dropouts or interference that look like a range problem to the PCM.

4. Incorrect air gap or contaminated sensor tip

Excessive spacing, metal shavings, or oil contamination on the magnetic tip weakens the signal amplitude and produces erratic readings.

5. Stretched timing chain or worn timing components

A loose chain can allow the reluctor to drift out of its expected relationship to the camshaft, leading to a signal that the PCM interprets as out of range.

6. Faulty engine control module (PCM)

Genuine PCM failure is rare; the module is usually blamed only after the sensor, wiring, tone ring, and timing have all been ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Scan for all stored and pending codes, noting any CKP-, CMP-, or misfire-related codes that appear alongside P0336.
  2. Visually inspect the CKP sensor, its wiring harness, and the electrical connector for damage, corrosion, oil contamination, or loose pins.
  3. Measure the CKP sensor's specified air gap and check the tip for metal debris or physical damage.
  4. Back-probe the CKP circuit to test supply voltage, ground, and reference signal, or use a lab scope to view the waveform pattern for noise, dropouts, or missing teeth.
  5. Remove or rotate-access the reluctor/tone ring to inspect for cracks, missing teeth, looseness, or contamination.
  6. Verify timing chain/belt condition and alignment if the sensor and tone ring check out, and only then consider PCM testing or replacement.
