P0317 — Rough Road Hardware Not Present

P0317 indicates the powertrain control module has detected that the rough road hardware input is not present or is not communicating as expected. The rough road sensor (typically an accelerometer) is used by the PCM to distinguish genuine engine misfires from vibrations caused by rough road surfaces. When this input is missing, the PCM may disable certain misfire detection functions.

2. Wiring harness damage or corrosion

3. Connector issue at sensor or PCM

Corroded, bent, or pushed-back pins in the sensor or PCM connector can cause an open circuit. This is especially common in vehicles exposed to moisture or road salt.

4. Incorrect PCM calibration or software mismatch

If the PCM was recently reprogrammed or replaced with an incorrect calibration that expects rough road hardware not present on that specific vehicle configuration, this code can set.

5. PCM internal failure

An internal fault in the PCM's input circuit for the rough road signal is rare and should only be considered after all sensor, wiring, and connector checks have been conclusively ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Verify the code with a scan tool and check for any coexisting codes, especially misfire codes.
  2. Confirm whether the vehicle is equipped with a rough road sensor per its specific configuration, as not all variants use this hardware.
  3. Visually inspect the rough road sensor, its connector, and the surrounding wiring harness for damage, corrosion, or disconnection.
  4. Perform continuity and voltage checks on the sensor circuit between the sensor and PCM following the manufacturer's wiring diagram.
  5. If wiring and connectors test good, evaluate the rough road sensor output with an oscilloscope or scan tool data stream as specified by the service manual.
  6. Only after all external components and circuits are verified should PCM calibration or internal PCM condition be investigated.
