P0293 means the powertrain control module has detected that cylinder 11 is not contributing its expected share of engine torque during its firing event. The PCM compares crankshaft acceleration between cylinders and flags cylinder 11 when its contribution falls outside calibrated limits, usually indicating a misfire, fueling, or mechanical imbalance.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Faulty or dirty cylinder 11 fuel injector

An injector that is clogged, leaking, or has a failing solenoid can deliver too much or too little fuel, making cylinder 11 under- or over-contribute compared with the others.

2. Ignition system fault on cylinder 11

A worn spark plug, weak coil, damaged plug boot, or secondary circuit issue can cause partial or complete misfire, reducing that cylinder's torque contribution.

3. Mechanical problem in cylinder 11

Low compression from worn rings, a leaking or burned valve, damaged piston, or cylinder head gasket failure can reduce combustion pressure and imbalance the engine.

4. Wiring or connector fault for cylinder 11

An open, short, corroded connector, or poor ground in the injector or ignition coil circuit can interrupt operation and produce an imbalance reading.

5. PCM software or hardware fault

PCM failure is uncommon; it can set this code only if it misinterprets crank sensor data or has a calibration issue after all mechanical, fuel, ignition, and wiring causes have been ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Confirm the code and check freeze-frame data; note any companion misfire or fuel-system codes to isolate cylinder 11 issues.
  2. Run a cylinder contribution or power-balance test and compare cylinder 11 against the others; inspect the spark plug, coil, or injector as applicable.
  3. Test cylinder 11 injector electrical and hydraulic operation, and inspect or swap the ignition coil and spark plug to see if the imbalance follows the component.
  4. Perform a compression test and, if needed, a cylinder leak-down test on cylinder 11 to identify internal mechanical wear or leakage.
  5. Inspect the wiring harness and connector for cylinder 11's injector/coil; update or replace the PCM only after all mechanical and circuit causes are eliminated.

Does P0293 mean I need a new PCM?

Usually not. PCM replacement is one of the least likely causes. Most P0293 faults are due to injector, ignition, mechanical, or wiring problems specific to cylinder 11. Consider the PCM only after everything else has been thoroughly tested.

Can I keep driving with P0293?

It is not advisable to drive long or hard with this code active. The imbalance can cause rough running, elevated emissions, and possible catalytic converter or turbo/catalyst damage depending on the engine.

Is P0293 only for diesel engines?
