1. Faulty boost pressure sensor

The sensor itself has degraded or failed internally, causing it to send an out-of-range voltage signal to the engine computer.

2. Wiring or connector fault

Corroded pins, chafed wires, or a loose connection can disrupt the signal voltage, causing the computer to see an erratic or out-of-range reading.

3. Vacuum or boost leak

A tear in a boost hose or a leaking intake gasket can cause actual manifold pressure to fall outside expected parameters, triggering a range/performance code.

4. Stuck wastegate or boost control solenoid

If the mechanical components controlling boost pressure fail to operate correctly, the resulting pressure may not match what the computer commands.

5. Engine computer (PCM/ECM) failure

An internal fault in the PCM preventing it from accurately reading the 5-volt reference or signal return. This is extremely rare and should only be considered after all other components are verified.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Use an OBD-II scanner to record all stored codes and freeze frame data to see under what conditions the code set.
  2. Visually inspect the boost sensor "B" wiring harness and connector for signs of damage, corrosion, or loose pins.
  3. Compare live boost pressure data from sensor "B" against sensor "A" (if equipped) or expected manifold absolute pressure values.
  4. Test the boost pressure sensor using a digital multimeter or vacuum/pressure pump according to the manufacturer's specifications.
  5. Pressurize the intake system to check for physical boost or vacuum leaks that could alter pressure readings.
