P0175 — System Too Rich Bank 2

P0175 indicates that the engine control module (PCM) has detected an excessively rich air-fuel mixture on Bank 2 (the side of the engine opposite cylinder #1). This means there is too much fuel or not enough air in the exhaust, causing the oxygen sensor to report a rich condition.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Leaking fuel pressure regulator

A faulty fuel pressure regulator can allow excess fuel to enter the intake manifold, causing a rich mixture on Bank 2. This is a common failure on many vehicles.

2. Leaking fuel injector

A stuck-open or leaking fuel injector on Bank 2 will dump extra fuel into that cylinder bank, leading to a rich condition.

3. Faulty mass air flow (MAF) sensor

A MAF sensor that over-reports incoming air volume causes the PCM to add too much fuel, resulting in a rich mixture across both banks, but the code may set on Bank 2 first.

4. Faulty oxygen sensor (Bank 2, Sensor 1)

A failed or contaminated oxygen sensor can get stuck reading 'rich' and falsely trigger the code, even if the actual mixture is correct.

5. EVAP purge valve stuck open

If the evaporative emission control purge valve remains open, fuel vapors are continuously drawn into the intake, enriching the mixture on Bank 2.

6. Faulty engine coolant temperature sensor

A coolant temperature sensor that reads too cold can cause the PCM to enrich the mixture, potentially triggering a Bank 2 rich code.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Scan for all stored codes and freeze frame data; note if other codes (e.g., P0172, P0101) are present.
  2. Inspect for obvious vacuum leaks or air intake restrictions; a rich code is rarely caused by a vacuum leak, but check anyway.
  3. Test fuel pressure and fuel pressure regulator operation; compare to manufacturer specifications.
  4. Check fuel injectors on Bank 2 for leakage using a noid light, resistance test, or injector balance test.
  5. Evaluate MAF sensor readings with a scan tool; compare to expected values at idle and under load.
  6. Monitor oxygen sensor voltage on Bank 2, Sensor 1; a stuck rich signal (above 0.8V) may indicate a bad sensor or actual rich condition.
