Code P0135 indicates that the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected a malfunction in the heater circuit of the oxygen sensor for bank 1, sensor 1 (the upstream sensor before the catalytic converter). The heater helps the sensor reach operating temperature quickly; a fault may cause the sensor to respond slowly, affecting fuel control and emissions.

5. PCM driver failure (rare)

The PCM provides a ground path to control the heater; an internal driver failure can prevent heater operation, but this is uncommon and should be considered only after ruling out all other causes.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Check for other codes and freeze frame data to see conditions when P0135 set.
  2. Inspect the oxygen sensor and its wiring harness for visible damage, corrosion, or loose connections.
  3. Check the oxygen sensor heater fuse and relay (if equipped); replace if blown and test for shorts before replacing the sensor.
  4. Measure the resistance of the sensor heater element (typically 2-10 ohms at room temperature); replace sensor if out of specification.
  5. With the key on, check for battery voltage at the heater power supply wire and verify the PCM provides a ground signal (using a test light or scope) during initial warm-up.
