P0125 means the engine coolant has not warmed up enough for the control module to switch from open-loop to closed-loop fuel control within the expected time after a cold start. This forces the engine to run a richer, less efficient fuel mixture longer than designed, usually because the cooling system is preventing normal warm-up or the temperature signal is inaccurate.

What causes it — most likely first

1. Thermostat stuck open

A thermostat that fails to close allows continuous coolant flow through the radiator, keeping engine temperature below the threshold required to enter closed-loop fuel control.

2. Faulty engine coolant temperature sensor

The ECT sensor can drift out of calibration or fail internally, sending a lower-than-actual temperature signal that causes the module to wait indefinitely for warm-up.

3. Low coolant level or air pocket

Insufficient coolant or trapped air around the sensor can produce erratic or falsely low readings, or reduce thermal mass so the engine warms too slowly.

4. Cooling fan running constantly

An electric fan stuck on due to a relay fault, or a locked mechanical fan clutch, can overcool the engine and prevent coolant from reaching closed-loop temperature.

5. ECT sensor wiring or connector fault

Corroded terminals, chafed wires, or poor connections can introduce resistance or voltage errors, making the module perceive a colder engine than reality.

6. Powertrain control module fault

In rare cases the PCM may misinterpret a correct sensor signal due to internal processing or calibration issues; this should only be considered after all mechanical and electrical causes are ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Check coolant level and condition, inspect for leaks, and bleed the cooling system if air pockets are suspected.
  2. Use a scan tool to view live ECT data and compare it to an infrared thermometer measurement at the thermostat housing to verify sensor accuracy.
  3. Monitor engine temperature during a road test; if it stays below normal operating range, remove and test the thermostat or replace it on probability.
  4. Inspect the ECT sensor connector and harness for corrosion, bent pins, or wire damage; measure sensor resistance or output voltage against specifications.
  5. Verify the cooling fan cycles properly and does not run continuously; check the fan relay, wiring, and clutch operation as applicable.
  6. If all hardware tests normal, investigate PCM calibration updates or internal module faults only as a final step.
