Code P0111 indicates that the Engine Control Module (ECM) is seeing an Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor signal that falls outside the expected range or does not perform as expected for the operating conditions. This typically points to the sensor, its wiring, or its connector rather than a control-module failure. The ECM uses the IAT signal to adjust fuel delivery and ignition timing, so an out-of-range reading can affect drivability and emissions.

1. Faulty Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor

The sensor element itself can drift out of calibration, go open, or short internally, causing the reported temperature to be implausible for the conditions.

2. Wiring or connector damage

Corroded, bent, or loose terminals and chafed or broken wires in the IAT circuit can cause high resistance, opens, or intermittent shorts that trigger a range/performance code.

3. Sensor contamination or incorrect installation

Oil, carbon, or debris on the sensor tip from an over-oiled air filter or crankcase ventilation system can insulate the element and skew readings.

4. Intake air leak near the sensor

A vacuum leak or unsealed intake duct downstream of the sensor can introduce unmetered air at a different temperature, causing the signal to appear out of range relative to other sensor data.

5. Engine Control Module (ECM) failure

Rarely, an internal ECM input circuit fault can misinterpret or fail to read the IAT signal correctly; this should only be considered after the sensor, wiring, and connector are fully verified.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Read and record all stored codes and freeze-frame data to confirm P0111 and check for related codes.
  2. Inspect the IAT sensor connector and wiring for corrosion, bent pins, looseness, chafing, or heat damage.
  3. Compare the live IAT temperature reading to a known-good reference (such as the ambient temperature or a second sensor) on a cold-soaked engine.
  4. Back-probe the sensor signal and ground circuits with a multimeter or scan-tool data stream to check for plausible voltage/resistance changes as the engine warms.
  5. Disconnect the sensor and perform a resistance check across its terminals, comparing values to a temperature-resistance chart for that sensor type.
  6. Only after the sensor, wiring, and connector are proven good, evaluate the ECM input circuit as a last-resort possibility.
