P0106 indicates that the PCM has detected the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor signal is outside the expected range or not performing as intended. The MAP sensor measures intake manifold pressure to help the PCM calculate air‑fuel mixture and ignition timing. When the sensor’s voltage or frequency is implausible, the code is set.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Faulty MAP sensor

The MAP sensor itself may be internally shorted, open, or out of calibration, causing the PCM to see a signal that is out of the expected range.

2. Wiring or connector issues

Damaged, corroded, or loose wires or connector pins between the MAP sensor and the PCM can produce intermittent or incorrect voltage readings.

3. Vacuum leak in the intake manifold

Unmetered air entering the intake changes manifold pressure, leading the MAP sensor to report values that fall outside normal limits.

4. Throttle body or intake restriction

A dirty or sticking throttle plate, or a blockage in the intake tract, can alter manifold pressure and trigger the sensor’s range/performance fault.

5. Barometric pressure sensor fault (if separate)

On vehicles where BARO is a distinct sensor, its failure can be interpreted by the PCM as a MAP circuit performance problem.

6. PCM/ECM fault

Although uncommon, a malfunction in the PCM’s MAP sensor input circuit can set P0106; this should be considered only after all other causes have been ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Scan for additional codes and review freeze‑frame data to see engine conditions when the code set.
  2. Visually inspect the MAP sensor, its wiring harness, and connector for damage, corrosion, or loose connections.
  3. Test MAP sensor output voltage (or frequency) with a multimeter or scan tool while the engine is running and compare to manufacturer specifications.
  4. Check for intake vacuum leaks using a smoke machine or carburetor‑cleaner spray around hoses, intake manifold gasket, and throttle body.
  5. Inspect and clean the throttle body; verify proper throttle plate movement and that there is no obstruction.
  6. If equipped with a separate BARO sensor, test its output; otherwise, consider PCM input circuit testing only after the sensor, wiring, and intake system are verified good.
