P0099 indicates that the powertrain control module has detected an intermittent or erratic voltage signal from the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) Sensor 2 circuit on Bank 1. The circuit is not providing a steady, predictable reading because of a temporary open, short, or internal sensor fault. This can cause the engine controller to receive inaccurate intake air temperature data and make suboptimal fuel and ignition timing adjustments.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Confirm the code and review freeze-frame data; monitor live data for rapid or irrational fluctuations in the IAT Sensor 2 parameter.
  2. Visually inspect the sensor connector and nearby wiring for corrosion, moisture, pin push-out, insulation damage, and secure mating.
  3. Perform a wiggle test on the sensor harness and connector while watching scan tool data or a digital multimeter to reproduce the intermittent signal loss.
  4. Check reference voltage and ground at the sensor connector; test the signal wire for continuity to the PCM and for intermittent shorts to ground or power.
  5. Measure sensor resistance across its terminals while applying controlled temperature changes and compare the results to specifications to identify internal intermittence.
