P0098 indicates that the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) has detected a voltage signal from the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) Sensor 2 on Bank 1 that is higher than the calibrated range. Because IAT sensors are typically negative temperature coefficient thermistors, a high voltage usually signals an extremely low temperature reading, an open circuit in the sensor or wiring, or a short to the 5-volt reference line.

1. Faulty IAT Sensor 2

The thermistor inside the sensor may have developed an internal open circuit, causing infinite resistance and a 5-volt signal to be returned to the PCM regardless of actual air temperature.

2. Open circuit in signal wire

A break, corrosion, or disconnected pin in the signal wire between the sensor and PCM prevents the sensor from pulling the voltage down, causing the PCM's internal pull-up resistor to set the circuit high.

3. Short to voltage in signal circuit

The signal wire may be chafed and touching the 5-volt reference wire or another power source, forcing the circuit voltage high.

4. Poor electrical connection

Corroded, bent, or moisture-laden terminals in the sensor connector can create an open-circuit condition or high resistance that mimics a cold temperature reading.

5. PCM internal fault

Rarely, the PCM may have a failed internal pull-up resistor or signal processing error; this should only be considered after sensor and wiring integrity are confirmed.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Visually inspect the IAT Sensor 2 connector and wiring for corrosion, bent pins, or damage; ensure the sensor is fully seated.
  2. With the ignition on and sensor connected, measure the signal voltage at the sensor; a reading near 5 volts indicates an open circuit or short to voltage.
  3. Disconnect the sensor and measure its resistance across the terminals, comparing the value to the manufacturer’s temperature-resistance chart; an open circuit reading confirms sensor failure.
  4. Check continuity between the sensor signal pin and the corresponding PCM pin to identify any breaks in the wiring harness.
  5. Verify the PCM is providing a stable 5-volt reference and a solid ground to the sensor; if present and the sensor/wiring are good, investigate PCM software or hardware faults last.
