P0076 means the engine control module has detected a low voltage condition in the circuit that controls the intake valve control solenoid on Bank 1. This solenoid is part of the variable valve timing (VVT) system and regulates oil flow used to advance or retard the intake camshaft. When the circuit reads low, the ECM cannot properly command the solenoid, which can affect engine timing, idle quality, and emissions.

What causes it — most likely first

1. Faulty intake valve control (VVT/OCV) solenoid

The solenoid itself is the most common failure. Internal winding shorts or out-of-range resistance produce the low-voltage reading the ECM flags.

2. Damaged wiring or connector to the solenoid

Chafed insulation, oil-soaked harness, corroded terminals, or a loose pin can create a short to ground that pulls the control circuit voltage low.

3. Low, dirty, or incorrect-viscosity engine oil

VVT systems depend on clean oil at proper pressure. Degraded oil can clog the solenoid screen and prevent normal phaser operation, frequently setting this code.

4. Clogged oil control valve screen or oil passages

Even with a good solenoid and fresh oil, internal sludge or debris can restrict flow to the cam phaser and trigger a low-circuit reading.

5. Worn or sticking camshaft phaser

Mechanical wear or sticking in the phaser itself creates abnormal loads on the control system and can present as a low-voltage code in some cases.

6. Engine control module (PCM/ECM) fault

Genuine PCM failures can set this code, but they are rare. Most reported PCM replacements for P0076 do not resolve the issue because the wiring or solenoid is the real cause.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Retrieve all stored DTCs and freeze-frame data to confirm Bank 1 and capture engine speed, load, and temperature at the time the code set.
  2. Check engine oil level and condition; confirm viscosity meets the manufacturer specification and look for signs of contamination or fuel dilution.
  3. Inspect the intake valve control solenoid harness and connector for chafing, oil saturation, corrosion, and bent or backed-out pins.
  4. Measure solenoid resistance with a multimeter and compare to specification; check both the control and power circuits for a short to ground or to power.
  5. Command the solenoid with a scan tool (if supported) while monitoring circuit voltage, and listen for the expected audible click.
  6. If wiring and solenoid test good, verify oil pressure to the cam phaser and inspect the oil control valve screen for clogging before considering PCM diagnosis.
