Code P0043 indicates that the powertrain control module has detected a lower-than-expected voltage in the heater control circuit for the oxygen sensor designated Bank 1 Sensor 3. This sensor is located downstream of the catalytic converter on the bank containing cylinder 1. The heater helps the sensor reach operating temperature quickly; a low-voltage condition typically points to a short to ground, a failed heater element, or a wiring fault.

What causes it — most likely first

1. Failed oxygen sensor heater element

The internal heater element inside the sensor can short or fail internally, pulling the control circuit low. This is the most common cause of heater circuit codes.

2. Wiring short to ground or damage

The wiring between the sensor and the PCM runs under the vehicle and is exposed to heat, moisture, and road debris. A chafed or melted wire shorting to ground will trigger a low-voltage code.

3. Corroded or damaged connector

The sensor connector or its mating harness connector can corrode, spread pins, or melt from exhaust heat, causing a poor or shorted connection in the heater circuit.

4. Blown heater circuit fuse

Many vehicles supply the O2 sensor heater through a dedicated fuse. A blown fuse can cause an open or low-voltage condition on the heater feed side of the circuit.

5. Failed PCM heater driver circuit

The internal driver in the PCM that controls the heater ground or feed can fail, though this is uncommon. This should only be considered after all wiring, connectors, fuses, and the sensor itself have been verified.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Visually inspect the sensor wiring harness and connectors for chafing, melting, corrosion, or road damage, particularly near the exhaust.
  2. Check the fuse that supplies the O2 sensor heater circuit and replace if blown; if it blows again, investigate for a short.
  3. Disconnect the sensor and measure heater element resistance across the heater pins at the sensor; compare to specification and replace the sensor if out of range or shorted.
  4. Back-probe the heater feed and control wires at the sensor connector with the key on; verify proper battery voltage on the feed and that the control side is not shorted to ground.
  5. Perform continuity and short-to-ground tests on the wiring between the sensor connector and the PCM connector.
  6. If wiring, connectors, fuse, and sensor all test good, only then evaluate the PCM driver circuit as a last resort.

Can I drive with code P0043?

In most cases the vehicle will drive normally because the heater only helps the sensor warm up faster. However, the sensor may not enter closed-loop operation as quickly, which can affect fuel economy and emissions, and the vehicle may fail an emissions test.

My mechanic says I need a new PCM for P0043. Is that likely?

No. PCM failure is rarely the cause of this code. The vast majority of P0043 cases are caused by a failed sensor, damaged wiring, a corroded connector, or a blown fuse. The PCM should only be suspected after all of those have been thoroughly tested and ruled out.

What does Bank 1 Sensor 3 mean?

Bank 1 is the engine bank that contains cylinder 1. Sensor 3 refers to the oxygen sensor located furthest downstream, typically after the secondary catalytic converter. Not all vehicles have a Sensor 3; this code applies to vehicles with multiple downstream sensors.

Will replacing the oxygen sensor fix it?
