This circuit controls the solenoid that regulates fuel pressure in the fuel rail, typically on direct-injection engines. Although rare, a failed driver transistor or internal short within the PCM can cause a low voltage reading. This should only be considered after all wiring and the solenoid have been verified.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Retrieve and record all freeze frame data and other codes to understand the conditions when the code set.
  2. Visually inspect the fuel volume regulator connector and wiring for damage, corrosion, or loose connections.
  3. Measure the resistance of the fuel volume regulator solenoid; compare to manufacturer specifications (typically 4–12 ohms).
  4. Check for a short to ground by disconnecting the solenoid and measuring resistance between the control wire and chassis ground (should be infinite).
  5. Verify power and ground at the solenoid connector with the key on; if missing, trace the circuit back to the engine control module.
  6. If all wiring and solenoid test good, suspect a PCM fault; perform a pin drag test at the PCM connector and, if necessary, have the PCM professionally tested.
