C0552 indicates that the longitudinal acceleration sensor is reporting a signal that is outside its expected range or fails a plausibility check. This sensor measures forward and rearward acceleration for the ABS, traction-control, and electronic stability-control systems. A stored code typically disables those stability aids until the fault is repaired.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Failed or drifting longitudinal acceleration sensor

The sensor element can wear, crack, or drift out of calibration, producing an out-of-range or implausible signal. This is the most common direct cause of C0552.

2. Wiring or connector fault

Corroded, bent, backed-out, or moisture-contaminated terminals, or chafed power, ground, or signal wires, can distort the sensor signal and set a range/performance code.

3. Incorrect mounting, orientation, or calibration

If the sensor bracket is loose, bent, or installed at the wrong angle, or if the system was never calibrated after suspension or sensor service, the control module may reject the readings.

4. Vehicle structural or suspension modification

Significant ride-height changes, collision repairs, or added components can alter sensor alignment and pitch, making longitudinal acceleration data appear implausible.

5. ABS / stability-control module fault

A rare internal failure in the ABS/ESC module can misinterpret or fail to process a valid sensor signal. This should be considered only after the sensor, wiring, mounting, and calibration have been ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Retrieve all codes and live-data readings from the ABS/ESC module; note whether the longitudinal acceleration value is stuck, zero, or clearly out of range with the vehicle stationary or during normal braking/acceleration
  2. Visually inspect the sensor, its mounting bracket, and electrical connector for damage, looseness, corrosion, or moisture intrusion; verify the sensor is mounted in the correct orientation
  3. Check the sensor power, ground, and signal circuits with a wiring diagram; wiggle the harness and connector while monitoring data to find intermittent opens or shorts
  4. Perform a sensor zero-point / calibration procedure with the vehicle level and all tires properly inflated, following the manufacturer’s required sequence
  5. If the sensor, wiring, mounting, and calibration are all correct and the code persists, evaluate the ABS/ESC control module as a last resort
