Code C0051 indicates a fault in the steering wheel position sensor circuit, which reports steering angle and rotation rate to the vehicle's stability control or electric steering system. When this signal is missing, implausible, or out of range, the control module sets this code and may disable related stability or steering-assist functions.

1. Steering wheel position sensor failure

The sensor itself is the most common point of failure. Internal electronics can degrade or fail outright due to heat, vibration, or age, producing an out-of-range or absent signal.

2. Wiring or connector damage

Corroded, chafed, or loose wiring and connectors in the steering column can interrupt the sensor signal. This is especially common in areas exposed to moisture or where the wiring flexes with steering movement.

3. Clock spring assembly fault

The clock spring carries electrical signals between the steering wheel and the column. If the ribbon or contacts inside are damaged, the steering position sensor signal can be lost along with other steering wheel functions.

4. Steering angle calibration not performed

After battery disconnect, steering component replacement, or wheel alignment, some vehicles require a steering angle zero-point calibration. Without it, the module may flag the sensor signal as invalid.

5. ESC or steering control module failure

Rarely, the module that reads the sensor signal can internally fail and misinterpret valid data. This should only be considered after the sensor, wiring, and calibration have all been verified.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Scan all chassis and ABS modules for additional codes that may point to a shared wiring fault or related component.
  2. Inspect the steering column wiring, connectors, and clock spring for visible damage, corrosion, or loose pins.
  3. With a scan tool, observe live steering angle data while turning the wheel lock-to-lock. The value should change smoothly and return to zero (or the designated center value) when centered.
  4. If the data is missing or erratic, test sensor reference voltage, ground, and signal circuits per the vehicle's wiring diagram before condemning the sensor.
  5. Replace the steering wheel position sensor if wiring and power/ground checks pass but the signal remains faulty.
  6. After any sensor or clock spring replacement, perform the steering angle calibration procedure specified by the manufacturer.
