This code indicates the ABS or stability control module has detected an irregular, missing, or implausible signal from the tone wheel (reluctor ring) at the left rear wheel. The tone wheel is a toothed ring that the wheel speed sensor reads to monitor rotation, and the code sets when the module cannot reliably interpret its pattern. Faults may stem from the ring itself, the sensor, the wiring, or related mechanical issues such as bearing wear.

Excessive bearing play can cause the tone wheel to oscillate relative to the sensor, creating an inconsistent air gap and signal dropout.

6. ABS control module internal fault

Rarely, the module may misinterpret a good sensor signal due to an internal hardware or software issue; this should only be considered after all mechanical and electrical causes are ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Visually inspect the left rear tone wheel for cracked, missing, or heavily corroded teeth; inspect the sensor and harness for obvious damage, corrosion, or loose mounting.
  2. Verify the wheel speed sensor is properly seated and the air gap is within specification; clean the sensor tip and tone wheel surface of any rust or metallic debris.
  3. Measure the left rear wheel speed sensor resistance and compare it to the specified range; rotate the wheel by hand and check for a consistent AC voltage output.
  4. Perform continuity and insulation tests on the wiring between the left rear sensor connector and the ABS control module to identify opens, shorts-to-ground, or shorts-to-voltage.
  5. Check the left rear wheel bearing for excessive radial play or noise that could cause the tone wheel to wobble and generate an erratic signal.
