B0081 is a body (B-) code indicating a fault in the deployment control circuit for the first row center seat belt load limiter. The load limiter is part of the seat belt system that controls tension on the occupant during a crash, and the airbag/SRS control module has detected an electrical problem in that specific circuit.

What causes it — most likely first

1. Faulty center load limiter / pretensioner

The load limiter itself is the component most likely to fail. Its internal squib or resistor can drift out of specification, triggering the code even with intact wiring.

2. Wiring harness damage to the seat belt circuit

Chafed, pinched, or broken wires between the SRS module and the center seat belt assembly are common, especially at seat mounting points, hinge areas, or where the harness runs under the carpet.

3. Corroded or loose connector at the load limiter or SRS module

The connector at the seat belt buckle or at the SRS module can develop corrosion, bent pins, or poor terminal contact, producing a high-resistance or open-circuit fault.

4. Previous crash event or deployment data stored

If the load limiter has already fired, or the module has crash data locked, the code will remain until the module is reset or replaced according to manufacturer procedures.

5. Low or unstable battery voltage during self-test

An undervoltage condition at the time the SRS module runs its self-diagnostic can cause a spurious B0081; this is often cured by charging the battery and clearing the code.

6. SRS / airbag control module internal fault

A failed SRS control module is a comparatively rare cause, but it can set B0081 if its internal driver circuit for the center load limiter channel is defective. This is the least likely cause and should only be considered after the wiring and component are ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Retrieve all SRS and body codes with a scan tool and document B0081 plus any related B-codes (B0082, B0083, etc.) and freeze-frame data.
  2. Perform a visual inspection of the wiring and connectors between the SRS module and the first row center seat belt load limiter, paying close attention to seat tracks, hinge points, and undercarpet runs.
  3. With the battery disconnected and the SRS system safely de-energized per service-manual procedures, measure the resistance of the center load limiter squib circuit and compare it to the manufacturer's specified value.
  4. Check battery voltage and charging system output, then clear the code and re-run the SRS self-test to determine whether the fault returns under normal voltage conditions.
  5. If wiring and component resistance are within spec, follow the manufacturer's pinpoint tests for the SRS module driver circuit before considering module replacement.
