Code B0039 indicates a fault in the deployment control circuit for the second-row right frontal airbag (Stage 1). The restraints control module has detected an open, short, or resistance value outside the expected range in the squib circuit or its wiring.

1. Open or high-resistance squib circuit

A broken wire, corroded connector, or damaged clock-spring/coil in the second-row right frontal airbag deployment loop prevents the control module from measuring the correct squib resistance.

2. Short to ground or voltage in deployment loop

Insulation damage or a pinched harness creates a low-resistance path to ground or battery voltage, triggering the fault.

3. Failed second-row right frontal airbag module (inflator)

The inflator squib itself measures out of specification, typically due to internal element degradation or manufacturing defect.

4. Corroded or loose connector at airbag or control module

Oxidation, bent terminals, or incomplete seating at the airbag connector or the restraints control module connector adds resistance or creates an intermittent open.

5. Restraints control module internal fault

The module's deployment driver or monitoring circuitry for this loop has failed; this is rare and should be considered only after wiring and inflator are verified.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Retrieve all SRS codes and freeze-frame data; note any companion loop codes.
  2. Visually inspect the second-row right frontal airbag harness, connectors, and routing for damage, corrosion, or dislodged terminals.
  3. With ignition off and battery disconnected per service procedure, measure squib resistance at the airbag connector and compare to specification (typically 1.5–3.5 ohms).
  4. If resistance is out of range, isolate the inflator by measuring directly at its pins; replace inflator if it fails spec.
  5. If inflator tests good, perform continuity and insulation checks on the harness between the airbag connector and the restraints control module connector.
  6. Verify restraints control module power, ground, and communication; replace module only if all wiring and inflator tests pass and the fault persists.
