1982 Oldsmobile 98

Factory specifications, fluid capacities, torque values, EPA fuel economy and the federal safety record for the 1982 98.

The 1982 Oldsmobile 98 appears in the model’s early reliability record with only two owner complaints, both concerning structure, and a single recall. Its complaint trajectory shows a sharp rise to 65 grievances in 1991 before dropping to a solitary complaint by 1999, indicating that the 1982 version precedes the bulk of the model’s later issues. Consequently, the 1982 98 represents an early, relatively uncomplicated chapter in the line’s durability story.

Reliability & federal safety record

Owner-reported issues, recalls, investigations and service bulletins on record with NHTSA — an unfiltered look at what owners actually experience.

The federal record for the 1982 Oldsmobile 98 is not represented directly in the data set, but the surrounding years provide context. From 1990 through 1999, complaints rose sharply in 1991 (65 complaints) and fell to a low in 1999 (1 complaint), with recalls remaining relatively stable (1–2 per year). Investigations peaked in 1991 and 1992, while the number of TSBs steadily increased from 4 in 1990 to 23 in 1993 before declining. The 1982 model sits at the beginning of this decade, before the spike in complaints, suggesting that early‑generation units likely benefited from fewer documented issues. However, the data do not specify any root causes for the 1982 complaints, nor does it provide fire or crash complaints, so the record is incomplete. Overall, given the absence of significant federal complaints in the years immediately following 1982 and the later decline in complaints, 1982 appears to be a relatively safer year to consider, but buyers should still inspect for structural wear due to the single complaint area reported.
