Reliability & federal safety record

Owner-reported issues, recalls, investigations and service bulletins on record with NHTSA — an unfiltered look at what owners actually experience.

The 2004 Jaguar X-Type recorded 136 federal complaints and 5 recalls, placing its complaint count above the 2003 level of 90 but below the 2002 peak of 133, while its recall count matched the 2003 figure and exceeded the 2005 figure of 0. Investigations remained at 0 for 2004, unlike the increase to 1 in 2006 and 2007, indicating a relatively stable oversight period. The complaint trend shows a sharp decline after 2004, dropping to 49 in 2005 and continuing downward, suggesting that 2004 represents a high‑point in reported issues. Notably, 20 crash‑related complaints and 2 fire‑related complaints were logged for 2004, the highest fire count in the series. Given the elevated complaint volume and the presence of crash and fire reports, the data do not support a recommendation to purchase a 2004 model.
