Factory specifications, fluid capacities, torque values, EPA fuel economy and the federal safety record for the 1984 Mustang.
The 1984 Ford Mustang specifies a 4.0-quart oil capacity with 5W-30 API viscosity, anchoring its maintenance baseline. Its reliability profile records 30 total owner complaints — led by electrical system concerns — and four recalls, a total that falls well short of the model line's later high of 868 complaints in 2005 but exceeds the 2026 low of four. That places the 1984 as a moderately reported year in the broader historical arc, indicating its electrical issues were notable but not dominant.

Owner-reported issues, recalls, investigations and service bulletins on record with NHTSA — an unfiltered look at what owners actually experience.
The 1984 Ford Mustang precedes the provided federal record, which begins in 1990. For the target year, the primary complaint areas were the electrical system with 11 reports and engine and engine cooling with 5, alongside 5 fire complaints and 0 crash complaints. This data sits well below the trend seen in the subsequent record, where complaints peaked at 868 in 2005 and technical service bulletins reached a high of 231 in 1999. Because the 1984 model shows significantly fewer reported issues than any year listed in the 1990-2026 arc, it implies a lower volume of federal complaints than later iterations. Based on these relatively low figures, this is a good year to buy.
