Factory specifications, fluid capacities, torque values, EPA fuel economy and the federal safety record for the 1984 LTD.
The 1984 Ford LTD takes 4.0 quarts of 5W-30 API oil, and its reliability record shows 15 total owner complaints with the top issue area being Engine & Engine Cooling alongside three recalls. While the broader model complaint history spanning 1990 to 2000 peaks at three complaints in 1991 and bottoms out at one in 1993, the 1984 edition's 15 complaints place it notably above that later range, signaling a more troubled entry in the LTD's timeline that researchers should weigh heavily when assessing this vintage.

Owner-reported issues, recalls, investigations and service bulletins on record with NHTSA — an unfiltered look at what owners actually experience.
The 1984 Ford LTD exhibits a high volume of issues, specifically within Engine & Engine Cooling (6 complaints) and the Electrical System (5 complaints). The record also notes 4 fire complaints and 1 crash complaint for this model year. In contrast, the federal record for later years between 1990 and 2000 shows a significant downward trend, with annual complaints ranging from only 1 to 3. This positions the 1984 model as a high-complaint outlier compared to the subsequent years in the dataset, although the data does not specify the root causes of these failures. Because of the higher frequency of electrical and engine issues and the presence of fire complaints, this is not a good year to buy.
