Factory maintenance schedule OEM · verified

Normal service, condensed from the factory interval matrix.

Under the factory schedule, replace the engine oil and filter every 15,000 mi; spark plugs every 30,000 mi; coolant every 30,000 mi. The big-interval services (every 30,000 mi for coolant, and the transmission fluid) are the ones owners most often skip — on a lower-mileage example, assume the original fluids are still in it and check them first.

Reliability & federal safety record

Owner-reported issues, recalls, investigations and service bulletins on record with NHTSA — an unfiltered look at what owners actually experience.

Federal data shows 1992 sits at a notable inflection point for the Spirit generation. After complaints peaked at 122 in 1991 alongside three recalls, 1992 saw complaints fall to 79 and recalls drop to one, while investigations held steady at two and technical service bulletins rose to 44 from 37 the prior year. The model then saw complaints climb back to 104 in 1993 and 111 in 1994, suggesting 1992 represented a temporary dip in the mid-generation elevation of owner reports rather than a sustained downward trend. For 1992 specifically, the highest-volume complaint areas were Power Train, Engine & Engine Cooling, Service Brakes, and Air Bags, accompanied by five fire and four crash complaints, though the federal data does not specify root causes. Relative to the 1991 peak and subsequent 1993–1994 rebound, 1992 carries fewer complaints and the lowest recall count of the core production run, making it a comparatively reasonable year to buy within this generation, provided prospective owners verify condition in the top complaint categories.
