Factory maintenance schedule OEM · verified

Normal service, condensed from the factory interval matrix.

Under the factory schedule, replace the engine oil and filter every 7,500 mi; spark plugs every 60,000 mi; coolant every 7,500 mi. The big-interval services (every 7,500 mi for coolant, and the transmission fluid) are the ones owners most often skip — on a lower-mileage example, assume the original fluids are still in it and check them first.

Reliability & federal safety record

Owner-reported issues, recalls, investigations and service bulletins on record with NHTSA — an unfiltered look at what owners actually experience.

With 233 complaints and 4 recalls, the 1994 Dodge Dakota shows higher federal activity than the 1993 model year but remains below the 271 complaints recorded for 1995. This model year sits within an early phase of moderate scrutiny, preceding a sharp upward trend where complaints exceed 487 and recalls reach double digits annually from 1997 through 2002. Specific federal records for 1994 highlight 4 investigations and 44 TSBs, with top complaint areas centered on Service Brakes, Hydraulic and Power Train systems. While there are 44 crash complaints and 5 fire complaints logged, the data does not specify the root causes for these incidents. Despite the investigation count exceeding the 1993 and 1995 figures, the significantly lower complaint volume compared to the late 1990s models makes the 1994 Dakota a statistically more stable choice for buyers within this generation's historical record.
