1986 Chevrolet P30

Factory specifications, fluid capacities, torque values, EPA fuel economy and the federal safety record for the 1986 P30.

Transmission Automatic 4-spd

The 1986 Chevrolet P30 is a heavy-duty chassis platform, most commonly found underpinning step vans, motorhomes, and commercial cutaway bodies, and it was offered with a choice of gasoline engines requiring 5 quarts of oil in viscosities ranging from 20W-20 to 5W-30. Its fuel economy, rated at 11 mpg combined, reflects the substantial weight and utilitarian nature of the vehicles it supported, while the standard 4-speed automatic transmission handled the torque demands of its workhorse powertrains. In terms of reliability, this model year recorded only three owner complaints—the lowest figure in the P30’s complaint history for the 1990–1999 period—with the primary issue being the fuel system, and it was subject to two recalls, positioning the 1986 as a notably trouble-free entry in the platform’s lifecycle.

Reliability & federal safety record

Owner-reported issues, recalls, investigations and service bulletins on record with NHTSA — an unfiltered look at what owners actually experience.

The provided federal record spans 1990 through 1999, so it contains no year-by-year data for 1986 or any earlier year, meaning the 1986 model must be viewed against the earliest documented years in the dataset. Across that 1990–1999 arc, complaints remained relatively muted in the early nineties before spiking to ten in 1994 and nine in 1998, while TSBs rose from zero to seven by decade’s end, indicating escalating issue reporting as the platform aged. For 1986 specifically, the dataset records only three discrete complaint areas—fuel system, air bags, and engine cooling, one each—alongside zero crash complaints and one fire complaint, with recalls, investigations, and TSB counts not provided. Because 1986 predates the documented timeline entirely, it sits before the generation’s mid-1990s complaint surge and late-1990s service-bulletin proliferation, implying a smaller federal footprint than its younger counterparts. With recalls, investigations, and TSBs not specified for 1986 in this record, the minimal complaint tally—set against the backdrop of significantly higher bulletin and complaint activity in the 1990s—suggests 1986 is a comparatively low-profile purchase candidate, though the absence of comprehensive pre-1990 federal data warrants caution.
