Factory specifications, fluid capacities, torque values, EPA fuel economy and the federal safety record for the 2013 X1 xDrive28i SAV.
The 2013 BMW X1 xDrive28i is a compact Sports Activity Vehicle built on the E84 platform, powered by a turbocharged inline-four that utilizes 7.3 quarts of engine oil with manufacturer-approved viscosities of 0W-30, 0W-40, or 5W-30, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive system; it achieves EPA fuel economy ratings of 22 mpg city, 32 mpg highway, and 26 mpg combined. This model year falls within the first generation of the X1 and, with 101 owner complaints filed and five safety recalls issued—primarily concerning air bag-related issues—it reflects the reliability challenges that characterized early X1 production, suggesting prospective buyers should factor in the vehicle's recall history and common complaint areas when evaluating long-term ownership costs.

Owner-reported issues, recalls, investigations and service bulletins on record with NHTSA — an unfiltered look at what owners actually experience.
Owner complaints about the 2013 BMW X1 xDrive28i SAV lead in one area — the air bags, 28 of 101 reports (28%), well ahead of the next concern. NHTSA has issued no recalls for this vehicle, so these are owner-reported concerns only. 4 of the reports describe a crash and 1 a fire — a small share of the total, but worth weighing against the air bags pattern above. These are tallies of what owners actually reported to the federal government, not an editorial score — and higher-selling models naturally rack up more reports.
