Factory specifications, fluid capacities, torque values, EPA fuel economy and the federal safety record for the 1991 318IS - E30.
The 1991 BMW 318IS occupies the E30 platform, channeling its engine exclusively through a five-speed manual transmission that EPA testing rated at 19 mpg city, 25 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined. Service requirements are light, with a 5.3-quart oil capacity and recommended viscosities of 10W-30, 10W-40, or 15W-40 meeting API SJ standards. Within the E30's reliability record, this model year draws only six owner complaints—concentrated in the engine and engine cooling category—alongside a single recall, marking it as one of the cleaner entries in the platform's ownership history.

Owner-reported issues, recalls, investigations and service bulletins on record with NHTSA — an unfiltered look at what owners actually experience.
Owner complaints about the 1991 BMW 318IS - E30 dominate in one area — the engine & engine cooling, 5 of 6 reports (83%), well ahead of the next concern. None of this vehicle's 1 recall campaigns target the engine & engine cooling, so those reports read as owner-reported wear-and-tear rather than an acknowledged defect. 0 of the reports describe a crash and 0 a fire — a small share of the total, but worth weighing against the engine & engine cooling pattern above. These are tallies of what owners actually reported to the federal government, not an editorial score — and higher-selling models naturally rack up more reports.
