Factory specifications, fluid capacities, torque values, EPA fuel economy and the federal safety record for the 1997 SLX.

Body SUVTransmission Automatic 4-spd

The 1997 Acura SLX is a midsize SUV that rides on the same platform as its 1995‑2000 generation siblings and is equipped with an automatic 4‑speed transmission paired with a drivetrain that requires 4.2 qt of 5W‑30 API‑rated oil. Its fuel economy is modest, delivering 13 mpg city, 17 mpg highway and a combined 14 mpg, reflecting the era’s emphasis on utility over efficiency. Owner‑complaint data show the model recorded only 11 total reports, with air‑bag issues topping the list and two recalls issued during its production run. Positioned toward the lower end of the five‑year complaint curve—well below the 1996 peak of 14 complaints—the 1997 SLX is generally regarded as one of the more reliable years in the SLX’s overall history.

Factory maintenance schedule OEM · verified

Normal service, condensed from the factory interval matrix.

Under the factory schedule, replace the engine oil and filter at 7,500 mi; coolant every 30,000 mi. The big-interval services (every 30,000 mi for coolant, and the transmission fluid) are the ones owners most often skip — on a lower-mileage example, assume the original fluids are still in it and check them first.

Reliability & federal safety record

Owner-reported issues, recalls, investigations and service bulletins on record with NHTSA — an unfiltered look at what owners actually experience.

The 1997 Acura SLX sits near the peak of a generation-wide problem arc that began with a single complaint in 1995, surged to 14 complaints and 2 recalls in 1996, and then gradually subsided. With 11 complaints, 2 recalls, and a generation-high 32 technical service bulletins, the 1997 model year still carries a significant burden of reported issues, though it shows a slight decline from the 1996 peak. The subsequent sharp drop to 6 complaints and 1 recall in 1998, followed by near-zero activity in 1999 and 2000, indicates that many of the early problems were resolved after 1997. While the high TSB count suggests that dealers had extensive guidance for addressing known concerns, the 2 crash-related complaints and the concentration of issues in the air bag system underscore lingering safety-related risks. Given this trend, a 1997 SLX represents a riskier purchase than a 1998 or later model, which offers a substantially cleaner record.
